Skanda: 

The Attacker, also known as Hindu God of War/Son of Lord Shiva, is an action movie set in 2023 in Telugu that was produced by Srinivasaa Chitturi under the banner of Srinivasaa Silver Screen in association with Zee Studios and directed by Boyapati Srinu. Alongside Sreeleela, Saiee Manjrekar, Srikanth, Ajay Purkar, Daggubati Raja, Prince Cecil, and Sharath Lohithaswa, Ram Pothineni plays two roles in the movie.

Under the provisional title BoyapatiRAPO, the movie was publicly unveiled in February 2022. In July 2023, the official title Skanda was revealed. Main production started in October 2022 and finished in August 2023. Santosh Detake and Tammiraju, in turn, are in charge of the cinematography and editing, while Thaman S composes the soundtrack.

On September 28, 2023, Skanda was released to acclaim from reviewers, ranging from positive to negative. With a ₹59.20 crore box office receipt compared to a ₹50 crore budget, the movie was a box office flop.

Storyline

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Rayudu arranges for his daughter to wed Chinnappa. Rayudu's daughter elopes with the son of Telangana Chief Minister Ranjith Reddy, who shows up at the wedding as a guest. Ranjith Reddy and Rayudu become enraged by this and become adversaries.

A college student named Bhaskar Raju, in the meantime, kidnaps the daughters of Rayudu and Ranjith Reddy, as well as Sreeleela Reddy, Bhaskar's classmate, and brings them to his hometown of Rudrarajupuram. 

The CEO of the Crown Group firm, Rudrakanti Ramakrishna Raju, who is facing the death penalty after being wrongfully imprisoned by Ranjith Reddy and Rayudu for refusing to justify their illicit money, is linked to the kidnappings, it is discovered. 

It is also stated that Bhaskar's father Manikanta Raju's best buddy is Ramakrishna Raju. As he was made to face the fallout to save his daughter Rudraganti Parineeta from being kidnapped by Ranjith and Rayudu's goons, Bhaskar is trying to establish Ramakrishna Raju's innocence.

Ranjith and Rayudu are forced to free Ramakrishna Raju from jail. After thereafter, at a temple celebration, the pair assaults Bhaskar and his family; however, Bhaskar's twin Skanda intervenes to save them. Ranjith and Rayudu eventually confess their misdeeds to the press. 

When Ramakrishna Raju asks about Skanda, it is discovered that Skanda is a well-known assassin from Morocco who killed Daniel, a big criminal leader located in Morocco. Skanda leaves, frightening Rayudu and Ranjith Reddy when they hear about his background; this suggests that Skanda 2 will reveal more about his past.

Production

Development 

The next film from Srinivasaa Silver Screen, directed by Boyapati Srinu, starring Ram Pothineni in the title role, was revealed on February 18, 2022. BoyapatiRAPO was the working title at the time. On June 1, 2022, a muhurtam puja took place in Hyderabad. For the first time, Sreeleela and Ram Pothineni were revealed to portray the major female roles on October 5, 2022.A sneak peek at the title Skanda was published on July 3, 2023.

Filming

The first session of principal filming was set to begin on October 6, 2022, in Hyderabad's Ramoji Film City. The action sequence was part of the second schedule, which started in November. In January 2023, the third schedule got underway. There was a scene with Pothineni and Sreeleela scheduled.

Release

Skanda was postponed from its original October 20, 2023, Telugu release date to September 28, 2023, along with dubbed versions of Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam.

Home media

Disney Star purchased the regional language satellite rights for the movie, while Zee Cinema purchased the Hindi version. The movie's digital streaming rights were purchased by Disney+ Hotstar, and it made its Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada debuts on November 2, 2023.

Critics reaction

Critics gave Skanda mediocre to poor reviews, praising Pothineni's portrayal and the action scenes but faulting the film's storyline and narrative.

"Skanda is a mass action entertainer that offers a solid performance by Ram Pothineni, energetic action scenes, and dances worth watching," 123Telugu noted, awarding the film 3 out of 5 stars. Fans and general audiences may love this high-octane entertainment, but others may not be as fond of its straightforward plot, nonsensical action scenes, and slow second part. 

You could watch this movie this weekend if you don't mind these characteristics." With only Ram and a few action scenes, Skanda is not the kind of movie you expect logic from, according to Neeshita Nyayapati of The Times of India, who awarded it two out of five stars.

Prakash Pecheti of The South First gave 1.5/5 stars and wrote "Skanda is a regular, routine and formulaic narrative of Boyapati Srinu. It induces meaningless opium into mass audiences with a logicless story and absurd comedy and might even spoil the day of revelry during Ganesh immersion." 

Srivathsan Nadadhur of OTTplay gave 1/5 stars and wrote "Skanda is a film that’ll even make Boyapati’s previous dud - Vinaya Vidheya Rama - seem infinitely better. There’s not much to say here, it’s just a bad day at work for the filmmaker. Ram Pothineni’s script selection woes continue and composer Thaman, who’s a natural with action entertainers, misses the bus by a wide margin."

In her critique, Sangeetha Devi Dundoo of The Hindu said, "Skanda is bloated with no innovation in storytelling, characterizations, music or action choreography. It is so relentless in its celebration of high-decibel mass fest that you may want to keep your noise-cancelling earphones handy. 

Towards the end, when we learn there is going to be a part two, it sounds like a threat." BVS Prakash of Deccan Chronicle criticized the film, calling it a "mindless gory action saga."

Future

The phrase "Unfolding in Skanda - II" is included in the film's last scene, hinting that there may be more to the Doppelgänger narrative. However, Boypati subsequently stated in an interview that he would not be moving on with a sequel because the movie fared poorly at the box office.
